The Common Man Speaks
I'm no fan of oil and our dependence on oil, but I'm not too naive to think the world today can run without corporate money, conglomerates, and capitalists. Where does the American Red Cross, Greenpeace, and numerous other non-profit organizations get the bulk of their fundings from? Exactly.
Until, at least, our campaign finance laws are rewritten to quell the influence of lobbyists and deter corrupt and indebted legislatures, new sweeping energy legislation will never pass. Oil will remain an embedded splinter that can't be easily picked out. To do so carelessly will not only scar the immediate wound but spread and kill the surrounding tissues without end.
Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel may be credited with the adage 'a great crisis is a great opportunity' but it takes tenacity, courage, generational selflessness, and foresight of people to take advantage of the opportunity. In this crisis, the people we've elected to represent our best interests have failed us again. Congress has shot down energy reform legislation just the end of last week's session. One can only hope that the President will forge steadfastly ahead of all the obstacles and emerge victorious or at least lay a solid foundation to be built upon for our energy future's sake just as he did with health and finance reforms!
