Marinated Spicy Tofu

It doesn't happen too often, but when I start to feel a bit sluggish I reach for something spicy. The hotter the better! Without fail, the heat would wake me up both physically and mentally. The heat in chili peppers increases the blood flow, pumps the heart harder, and raises the body temperature- sort of a lazy person's workout. I'm not advocating turning in your running shoes for jalepenos, I'm just saying, adding capsaicin to your diet is very beneficial, unless you're allergic to it of course! If you can't take spicy food, then add its health benefits in supplement form.

My whole family loves chili like the Cookie Monster loves, well...cookies! Chili-garlic sauce, Srirachi hot sauce, Shichimi chili mix,Thai chilis, crushed red peppers, cayenne, Schechuan peppers, jalepenos, Scotch bonnets, habaneros...we love them all!

Makes 3-4 appetizer servings

Ingredients

• 6 fried soft tofu cakes- sliced in half both horizontally and vertically into rectangles
• 2 cups green chives- cut into approx. 2" stalks
• 3 garlic cloves- minced
• 1 tbs Korean ground red chili flakes
• 1 Thai bird chili (optional)- char over stovetop**
• 2 tbs brown sugar
• 1" knob of ginger- minced
• 3/4 - 1 tbs fish sauce- preferrably 3 Crabs brand
• 1 tbs soy sauce- Korean or Japanese brew
• 1.5 tbs sesame seed oil
• 1- 1/5 toasted sesame seeds

Directions

1.  Blend together all the ingredients except for the tofu and chives.

2.  Fold the chives in.

3.  Layer the tofu with marinade or just gently mix the tofu with marinade in a container. 

4.  Cover container and refrigerate for a few hours before serving.

This keeps for a couple of days.
